Most of the issues you'll run into and the modules themselves have pretty good documentation or discussion going on across the internet (especially and stackoverflow), and like most communities, you can always ask if the question you've got hasn't been answered somewhere else. Custom modules can introduce even more complexity, especially if you're not a programmer of whatever language it was written in. Familiarize yourself with SSH and Drush, you'll save a good amount of time using the command line with Drupal.Ī lot of the complexity of Drupal lies in how the website is designed and how many modules are being used. Will you be managing the server and/or it's configuration as well? This would be a good time to get familiar with whatever setup they have (apache or nginx) and start to feel comfortable with it. I think your best bet would be to setup a cheap server, install Drupal, and then try to do as much as you can inside of it. I know there are lots of Drupal books out there but I can't really speak to any of them specifically.
